Pomfret Masala Tawa Fry

Pomfret is a sea-water fish with a single bone, which is usually cooked as a whole after removing the inner part of fish. They don't have a strong fishy odor unlike other sea-water fishes. The earlier form of the Pomfret's name was "Pamflet", a word which probably ultimately comes from Portuguese pampo, referring to various fish.

It has a good nutritional value. Pomfret fishes are high in fat content, provides calcium, vitamins A and D, and B­ vitamins, including Vitamin B12. Increased Vitamin B12 makes it important for the nervous system. It also contains good amount of iodine, critical for the thyroid gland. So, Pomfret is good for eyesight, healthy hair and skin.

The Pomfret is an elitist fish. It is highly in demand and expensive too. It can be baked, grilled, fried and used in curries. My personal favorite is "Pomfret Masala Tawa Fry", prepared in the same way that they do on sea beaches.


Ingredients :
  • 1 Pomfret Fish, Washed well and cut in slits 
  • 1 Twig Curry Leaves 
  • Coconut Oil (preferably) or Mustard Oil for Frying Fish
Masala Paste :
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp Chilly Powder
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin Powder 
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder 
  • 1 tsp Fish Fry Masala (optional)
  • 2 tsp Oil 
  • 1 tbsp Beaten Curd
  • Salt
  • 1 tbsp Besan
Recipe Details :

✓ Clean the fish well, make slits and keep aside.

✓ In a Bowl, add all the above ingredients under Masala Paste and mix well to make a smooth paste. 1-2 tsp water can be added if needed. If you like the fish as crispy, a tbsp of rice flour can be mixed.

✓ Using Hand, apply this mixture to the fish thoroughly and marinate them for minimum 1 hour. Please note, to get the best taste we can marinate it overnight.

 
✓ Heat a Kadai and add coconut oil to it. Once the Oil is hot, place the marinated fish in Kadai. Add some Curry leaves for a increased flavor.


✓ Cook each side for around 10-12 mins in low medium flame until the fish is cooked nicely and give a nice odor.

✓ Pomfret Fish Fry is ready now to serve hot with some salads and half a piece of lemon.
