Cabbage Dal is a healthy, tasty, quick to prepare recipe, perfect for Winter dinner along with some hot phulka/roti/chapati. During our school days, when my mom was in a spree to make us eat healthy yet delicious dishes, this was our dinner quite often and we love this recipe then and always.
Today's recipe from Panda's Kitchen is "Cabbage Dal", the same recipe from my mom's kitchen.
Ingredients :
- 1/2 cup Dry Roasted Moong Dal - washed and soaked for around 30 mins (any Lentils can be used)
- 1 cup Cabbage - finely chopped
- Salt
- 1/2 tsp Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Red Chilli powder
- 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- 3 Green Chilles - slitted
- 6-8 Curry Leaves
- A pinch of Hing
- 1 tsp Ginger Garlic paste (you can use finely chopped ginger and garlic)
- 2 Onion - finely chopped
- 2 Tomatoes - finely chopped
- 1 tsp Ghee(optional)
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 2 tbsp Chopped Coriander Leaves
Recipe Details :
✓ In a pressure cooker, add moong dal, cabbage, salt, Turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Close the lid and cook for 3 whistles in high flame.
✓ Let the cooker cool down, then open it and check that it's perfectly cooked. Mix well.
✓ In a kadai, heat Oil. Add Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, green chillies and curry leaves to it. Fry for few seconds.
✓ Add onion and ginger garlic paste. Saute and cook for 2-3 mins till the raw smell is gone.
✓ Add tomato and cook till Tomatoes are soft.
✓ Add salt, red chilli powder, garam masala. Mix everything well. Add a little water if needed. Close the lid and cook for around 5 mins in low flame.
✓ Add boiled cabbage and dal. Mix everything well. Make sure not to over-mash them.
✓ Add sugar, adjust salt and sugar quantity at this stage. Cover the lid and cook for 5-8 mins more in medium flame.
✓ At the last step, add chopped coriander leaves and ghee. It's optional, but gives the dal really a nice delicious aroma and taste.
✓ Cover and keep it rest for 5 mins and Cabbage Dal is ready to serve hot along with rice/roti.
