Tomato Chicken

"Tomato Chicken" - the name is self explanatory. Chicken is first marinated, fried a little and then cooked with lot of fresh, juicy, tender tomatoes. It's a quick dish which can also be prepared in a quick weekday lunch. This tangy flavored recipe goes well with rice and roti both. The color of "Tomato Chicken" is really appealing.

 Ingredients :

  • 500gm Chicken 
  • Salt 
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder 
  • 2 tsp Red Chilly Powder 
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper Powder 
  • 1 tsp Chicken Masala 
  • 1 tsp Cumin Powder 
  • 1 Bayleaf 
  • 2-3 Cloves 
  • 1 inch Cinnamon Stick 
  • 2 Cardamom 
  • 2 Red Chilly 
  • 2 Onion - finely Chopped or sliced 
  • 3 Tomatoes - finely Chopped 
  • 2 Green Chilly - finely chopped 
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste 
  • 1 tsp Milk fat or Cream 
  • Mustard Oil for Cooking 
  • Some Chopped Coriander Leaves for garnishing

Recipe Details :

✓ Wash the chicken and marinate with salt, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chilly powder, 1/2 tsp Pepper powder and oil. Mix well. Cover and keep aside for around 30 mins.


 ✓ In a pan, heat oil. Slightly fry the chicken pieces for around 4-5 mins in medium flame and take them out.


✓ In the same kadai, put some more oil. Add Bayleaf, cardamom, cloves, Cinnamon Stick and red chilly. Fry for few seconds.


✓ Add onion and cook for 2-3 mins till it is slightly cooked.


✓ Add ginger garlic paste. Mix and cook for around 3-4  mins in medium flame.


✓ Add the tomatoes to kadai. Mix again.


✓ To this now add salt, red chilly powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder and chicken masala. Stir and mix. Cover and cook for around 5-7 mins in low flame till tomato softens and masala starts leaving oil.


✓ Add the fried chicken pieces to kadai. Mix well with the Masala.


✓ Add half cup water and let it come to boil.


✓ Add the rest of the pepper powder and some green chilly, mix again and cook for around 8 mins in low flame.

✓ Add the milk fat or cream. Mix again. Cover and cook for 5 more mins.


✓ Add the chopped coriander leave and some green chilly. Serve hot.

Tips: if you want it with gravy, add 1 cup of water at the end and cook in simmer for 5 mins.
Always use fresh tomatoes for this, not tomato puree or ketchup.
