Aloo Chop / Aloo Bonda / Potato Chop

Lockdown at home, with shortage of groceries to manage..
Hardly any Grocery or vegetable store nearby is open and all online orders are stopped too...!!!

It's a Sunday evening, a gloomy evening in fact for a foodie duo who wait for the weekend desperately just to have a special meal... So, how to make ourselves feel good ???

The only Vegetable left in my kitchen is Potato... And it's been ages we had the Odisha special Aloo Chop, with the delicious Masala stuffing inside, covered by very thin layer of Besan coating, which is difficult to get anywhere else away from Odisha!!! How about having this scrumptious snacks in the evening along with a cup of tea!! 😋😋

This easy-to-make cuisine is a real snacks treat for the vegetarians and can be prepared within minutes with very few ingredients.. Today, I  am sharing this Odisha style Aloo Chop to make your lock-down little busy and tasty 😉

 Ingredients :

  • 4-5 Potatoes - Boiled and Smashed (makes serving for 4 people)
  • 1 Big Onion - Finely Chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies - Finely Chopped (skip it if you don't want it to be spicy)
  • 1 tbsp Crushed Ginger and Garlic
  • 15-20 raw Peanuts
  • 4-5 Curry Leaves
  • 1 cup Besan
  • 2 tbsp Rice Flour
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp Red Chilly Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala Powder
  • A pinch of Baking Soda
  • Oil in a Kadai to Deep fry
Recipe Details :

✓ In a kadai, heat 1 tbsp Oil. Add the peanuts to it and fry for 1-2 mins.

✓ Add chopped onion, green chilly, curry leaves and crushed ginger garlic to it. Saute for around 5 mins in low flame until Onion becomes translucent.

✓ To this, add salt, half of the turmeric powder, half of the chilly powder and half of the garam masala powder. Saute for a min until the raw smell of the masala is gone.

✓ Now, add the boiled and smashed potatoes to it and mix well with masala to create a potato masala mixture.

✓ Turn off the flame and keep it aside. Let the masala cool down.

✓ Now let's prepare the Besan Batter, which is the outer covering of chop.

✓ In a bowl, mix besan, rice flour. To this add the rest half each of chilly powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder. Now add salt as per taste and baking soda. Mix all the dry masalas nicely.

✓ Keep adding water little by little to make a semi liquid thin batter.
✓ Take a small portion of the potato mixture and make small round-shaped balls.
✓ Heat oil in a Kadai for deep frying.

✓ Once the oil is hot, take the Potato mixture balls one by one and dip them into besan batter. Coat the balls nicely and evenly all around.

✓ Drop them into the hot oil in kadai.

✓ Deep fry in medium flame until both the sides turn golden brown.

✓ Once done, take them out on a tissue paper and drain off the excess oil.

✓ Sprinkle some black salt over it and Serve hot with some salad and ketchup.
